After Christmas we had a few returns to make.
Some Patagonia items that didn't quite fit right.
So we drove down to the Patagonia store near our house to do some returns and exchanges.
While my wife handled that, I wandered the store to see what was new, what was moving, and what was hanging on the racks.
Which is when I noticed this phrase on every tag of every piece of clothing in the store:
“We’re in business to save our home planet”
Talk about a clear North Star.
No ambiguity. No hedging. No confusion about who they are, what they stand for, or why they exist.
That single sentence becomes a filter for every decision Patagonia makes:
What to build.
What to sell.
What to say yes to.
What to walk away from.
Even decisions that don't look "smart" in the short term.
Like the time Patagonia ran a full-page ad on Black Friday telling people not to buy their jackets while their competitors, like North Face, played the typical game.

That's not a marketing stunt. That's clarity in action.
Being clear on their North Star gives Patagonia one of the most powerful forces in the world: clarity.
And clarity is what creates velocity.
Because when you know where you're going, you stop reacting to noise.
You stop chasing shiny objects.
You stop becoming a wandering generality, pulled by trends, pressure, or other people's priorities.
Instead, you move in a straight line with power.
Like someone heading to the airport for a 7am flight.
“You wanna grab coffee?” … “Can’t. I’ve got a flight to catch.”
“You wanna come on our podcast?” … “Can’t. I’ve got a flight to catch.”
What's interesting is how much modern performance culture overlooks this.
We obsess over productivity, biohacking, energy, supplements, and optimization, while ignoring the foundational importance of having a clear North Star because it's not sexy.
You can't buy it.
You can't outsource it.
And no one can give it to you.
It requires a deep, internal knowing.
But when you have it, decisions simplify.
Focus sharpens.
And execution accelerates.
This is why Patagonia became a billion-dollar brand without losing its way.
And it's why high-impact leaders who feel scattered, reactive, or overloaded often don't have a performance problem.
They have a clarity problem.
To your success,
James
P.S. A related fun fact. The founder of Patagonia made billions, then gave the entire company away to fight climate change.
